02 · QUESTIONS
Billing increments, answered.
How do 6-minute billing increments work?
One hour is split into ten parts of 6 minutes, so each part is 0.1 hour. Time is rounded to a whole number of parts, usually up: a 17-minute call becomes 3 parts, 0.3 hour. A 2-minute email becomes 1 part, 0.1 hour.
Is 0.1 hour the same as 6 minutes?
Yes. 0.1 × 60 = 6. So 0.2 hour is 12 minutes, 0.5 hour is 30 minutes, and 1.0 hour is 60 minutes.
How many billable hours is 15 minutes?
0.25 hour at quarter-hour increments. At 6-minute increments it is 0.3 hour when rounded up and 0.2 hour when rounded down.
Should I round up, down, or to the nearest increment?
Most hourly professionals round up to the next increment and bill at least one increment per task. Nearest rounds a tie up, so 3 minutes at 6-minute increments is 0.1 hour. Some clients' billing guidelines ask for actual time or rounding to the nearest increment. Use what your engagement letter or the client's guidelines say, and use the same rule for every entry.
What is a minimum billing increment?
The smallest unit you bill. With a 6-minute increment and round-up, any task shorter than 6 minutes bills as 0.1 hour. With round-down, a task shorter than one increment bills as zero, which is why most firms round up.
How do I convert a start and end time to billable hours?
Subtract the start from the end to get minutes, then round to your increment. 9:00 to 9:17 is 17 minutes, which rounds up to 0.3 hour at 6-minute increments. The Start and end mode on this page does that for you, including times that cross midnight.
Does this calculator save or send what I type?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us or stored. The site records only that the page was viewed and that the Copy or Krono buttons were clicked, never the minutes, times or rate. Krono the app works the same way: recordings, transcripts and notes stay on your computer.
